Fabricating for Our 100% Green Customer

We are reflecting on the fabrication of a piece of equipment we designed to hold slurry for one of our local, valued customers who are 100% green, powered by their own renewable energy!

This pit was primarily MIG welded, showcasing the skill of our team in delivering a robust, high-quality end product.

It’s always rewarding to support customers who share our commitment to sustainable solutions, and this project is a great example of how engineering can support a greener future!

Watly Chosen Charity

As we move into the second half of the year, we’re proud to continue our commitment to making a positive impact within the community!

For the next six months, we’ll be supporting Yeovil Hospital Charity, with a £50 donation made for every customer feedback form completed, where proceeds will go directly towards the Special Care Baby Unit. We’ll also have a collection box available at our workshop for anyone who would like to contribute directly.

We are hoping to raise an even greater amount and continue making a difference!

NextGen Somerset Business Breakfast

We are proud to have one of our team memebrs as co-chair of the young professionals group, NextGen Somerset.

NextGen Somerset are a professional development network specifically designed for employees and apprentices in the early stages of their careers across the Somerset area. Founded by the Place Leadership Group in Yeovil 3 years ago, NextGen brings together individuals from a wide range of industries to build confidence, develop skills, and grow their professional networks.

We are supporting their event by attending and invite you to come along!

This event will bring together employers from across Somerset, along with the NextGen community, to look ahead at what our local businesses might need to future-proof their companies. The morning will include speakers, a panel discussion and a workshop, all centered around the challenges and opportunities ahead and what the future of work in our area could look like - along with a breakfast butty, what's not to like!

Breakaway is a wonderful charity that provides much-needed respite for carers and families who rarely get a break. Their holiday caravan located at Haven's Sandy Bay in Devon, offers a peaceful escape for:
- Carers and their loved ones who need time away from daily responsibilities.
- Families coping with bereavement who need space to reconnect.
- Families facing challenging times and in need of rest and recovery.

Watly Engineering's Two Metal Fabricator Apprentices

We are excited to welcome aboard Euan Macauley, one of our two new workshop apprentices who has joined the Watly team!

Euan is set to immerse himself into the world of stainless steel fabrication, gaining hands-on experience whilst learning from our experienced team both in the workshop and on site.

We’re looking forward to supporting Euan as he takes his first steps of his career in the engineering industry!

Also, a warm welcome to Jess Cornelius-Mullings, another talented workshop apprentice who has recently joined our growing team!

This role involves contributing to a variety of projects, where Jess will develop practical skills and gain valuable industry insight along the way.

We look forward to watching Jess grow in confidence and skill as she contributes to our projects and becomes part of the next generation of engineering talent!

We need your help to support the future of the engineering industry!

Watly Engineering Ltd — 15/06/2026

There are big changes on the horizon for the engineering industry, and they could have serious consequences for manufacturing businesses across the UK.

From 1st July 2026, the Government is proposing changes to steel import quotas and tariffs. In simple terms, the new proposal outlines that tariff-free allowances will be reduced, and any imports above those limits could be hit with a 50% tariff.

Our business, like many others in the industry, relies on stainless steel products that simply are not produced at a sufficient scale we need within the UK. As a result, if these changes go ahead, we could face significantly higher costs, disrupted supply chains, and a real pressure upon our ability to stay competitive.

The challenge is immediate. The UK’s current steel manufacturing capacity is not in a position to meet the sudden increase in demand these changes would create. That gap doesn’t just disappear. In fact, it becomes a cost and availability issue for businesses like ours overnight.

And the impact doesn't stop there.

Our engineering services help keep local cheese factories and dairies running efficiently. These businesses form a vital part of the local economy and food supply chain. If our costs rise or operations are disrupted, the knock-on effects will be felt far beyond our own workshop.

We are also proud to support the next generation of engineers through apprenticeships with Yeovil College. However, with increased financial pressure on our business, it is somewhat inevitable that this will effect the opportunities we can offer for young people entering the industry.

This is why it is important that the Government considers the wider impact on local supply chains, apprenticeships, and the long-term resilience of engineering in our area. The Government needs to hear from the industry, loud and clear, before irreversible decisions are made.

Work Experience at Watly Engineering

Last week we really enjoyed welcoming a work experience student from a local school to our team!

It’s been a fantastic opportunity to give them a first-hand look into the world of engineering — from learning about fabrication and design, to seeing how projects can come together on the workshop floor.

Supporting the next generation of engineers is something we’re genuinely passionate about, and it’s great to see young people showing real interest and enthusiasm for the industry!
